Father Ubu represents triumphant stupidity. He crushes morality, rules, laws, decency, honors, values, feelings. He also crushes intelligence, art, beauty. We all know Father Ubu: cruel leader, cretinous military man, narrow-minded State, smiling tyrant, impeccable bandit, wigged crook, pathetic in every way. That is why we appreciate him. He is what we refuse, what we cannot say, and probably what we ultimately aspire to.
