It is the smallest commune in Algiers.

Posted by Michel Morvan on

Inhabited since the Neolithic period , it was a Punic port, then Berber and finally Roman . Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1992, it has played a crucial role in history at several times, particularly during the Algerian War, when it served as a stronghold for the FLN independence movement .

Of course, this is the Casbah of Algiers ! A cultural hotspot, it was the birthplace of Himoud Brahimi , poet , writer, philosopher, actor, director... and freediving champion!

The Madman of the Casbah , by Jean-René Huleu, is a tribute to Momo , whose real name is Mohamed Brahimi , known as Himoud .

"Himoud Brahimi, known as Momo de la Casbah, met on the trail of Isabelle Eberhardt twenty-five years ago, transmitted to me a knowledge and a message that this text would like to share. The one that the people of Algiers know as the poet of the Casbah was in reality a Sufi initiated into the best sources of his time, as inspired as he was ignored by his contemporaries."
